Thief Steals Barrel of Gold Flakes From Armored Truck in NYC
A crook kept running off with over $1 million worth of gold in the wake of swiping a barrel from a shielded truck in Midtown, police sources said Friday.
The shameless burglary went down on W. 48th St. close Fifth Ave. Thursday evening, when two gatekeepers on a Loomis International truck making a get in the Diamond District saw that one five-gallon drum of gold chips – part of a bigger shipment made a beeline for Canada – was missing.
The 86-pound tin of valuable metals, esteemed at around $1,565,000, was a piece of a conveyance intended to wind up in Ontario with an organization called Asahi Refining, sources said.
The truck's observation cameras found a suspect lifting a holder and sprinting off east on 48th St, sources said.
The truck had begun its day grabbing a heap on W. 47th St. close sixth Ave, before making the stop on W. 48th St.
Four 55-gallon buckets of silver and four other five-gallon compartments of gold were untouched.
Police sources portrayed the suspect as a Hispanic man wearing a dark vest over a green shirt, and conveying a dark delivery person sack.
